DOT Physical Exam for CDL Drivers
Driving commercial trucks, buses and other large vehicles is challenging, requiring good physical condition and stamina. One of the ways employers ensure their drivers are up to the task is through a DOT physical exam. The CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) physical exam is required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate commercial vehicles, and the DOT has authorized practicing naturopaths to serve as medical examiners. ISM Health has contracts with the following local businesses to perform the CDL DOT Physicals: LWSD (Lake Washington School District), NSD (Northshore School District), Bothell City, NUD (Northshore Utility District).
How Often Do You Need a Medical Exam?
The CDL Physical Exam determines if drivers have adequate overall physical health and ability to safely drive a commercial vehicle. Drivers are usually required to get a physical every 2 years, but exams can sometimes be required more frequently depending on a number of factors.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Dr. Agisheva will check your vision and hearing to ensure they meet minimum standards. You’ll also be assessed for medical conditions that could influence your ability to operate a bus, truck, or similar vehicle with minimal risk. Disqualifying conditions may include seizure disorders, substance abuse problems, diabetes, heart disease, mental illness, and missing limbs. Variances may be requested to have some requirements waived.
Where Are Exams Offered?
Only medical examiners authorized by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are authorized to complete the DOT physical exam to meet your CDL medical requirements, and Dr. Jamie Agisheva, ND is so authorized. Depending on the results of your physical, she’s also qualified to provide any naturopathic care needed.
